SPIES-DETOX is a European Union funded project looking at:

Active biological monitoring and removal of toxins in aquaculture ecosystems and shellfish - including the development of a Solid-Phase In-situ Ecosystem Sampler (SPIES) and detoxification of shellfish (DETOX)

Strategic Objectives Addressed

  • Enhanced food safety for shellfish products
  • More efficient and effective monitoring of water quality in areas of aquaculture and inshore fisheries
  • Reduced disruption and economic loss to the fish farming and shellfish industries
  • Increased training of Quality Control personnel in the industry
  • Information and data to inform future EU directives and standards

The project is being carried out jointly between leading European Research Centres, Shellfish Trade Organisations and Shellfish SMEs in UK, Norway, Ireland, Spain and Greece (project consortium).
